Château St-Maire
Lausanne, Switzerland, Switzerland
Château Saint-Maire is a medieval fortress in Lausanne, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland, built between 1397 and 1425 by the Bishops of Lausanne as their fortified residence on the Cité hill, featuring a massive rectangular block with brick upper portions, sandstone base, and original Ghibelline merlons adapted for the wet climate.
It served as the bishops' seat until 1536, when Bernese forces captured it during the Reformation, repurposing it as a bailiff's residence and armory, with a western annex added in 1789 for access.
Since the creation of Canton Vaud in 1803, it has housed the cantonal government as the seat of the Council of State, recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance though not open to the public.
