Church of Saint James the Greater (Apostle)
Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Church of Saint James the Greater Apostle in Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a Catholic parish church consecrated in 1969 to replace an earlier 1897 building that was structurally unsound. Designed by architect Stjepan Podhorsky in a classical basilical style, it features two square-based towers with tented roofs flanking a central three-door entrance adorned with a relief of Saint James the Greater, the church’s patron saint.
The parish was founded in 1892 and is managed by the Franciscan order. Since 1981, the church has become a major pilgrimage site linked to reported Marian apparitions. To accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims, an outdoor altar and prayer area with seating for about 5,000 were added in 1989.
The church remains a central spiritual and cultural hub for both locals and visitors worldwide.
