Felsenburg
Kandergrund, Switzerland, Switzerland
Felsenburg is a ruined medieval castle perched on a rocky spire in Kandergrund, Canton of Bern, Switzerland, likely constructed in the 12th century by the Freiherr of Kien to guard the road over the Gemmi Pass into Valais.
It changed hands among nobles like the Freiherren of Wädenswil in 1290 and Turn in 1312, with records noting it as "castrum de Petra" in 1339 and "Stein" in 1368, before Bern acquired and abandoned it around 1400, allowing it to decay.
Today, only the rectangular main tower and fragments of outer walls remain on this dramatic site, classified as a Swiss heritage site of national significance and accessible via hiking trails near Mitholz.
