Five Gates Castle
Foça, Türkiye, Turkey
Five Gates Castle, also known as Beş Kapılar or Foça Castle, is a historic coastal fortress in the town of Foça, İzmir Province, Turkey, built in the 11th-12th century with Byzantine origins and later controlled by Genoese merchants in the 14th century.
The Ottomans captured it in 1455, repaired the walls, and added towers between 1538-1539 under Suleiman the Magnificent, including a boathouse section now called the "five gates" that once served as boat exits.
Part of UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List for Genoese trade fortifications, it features weathered walls offering sea views and stands amid ancient Phocaean ruins.
