Verified Fort William, Ghana

Anomabu, Ghana, Ghana

Fort William is a historic fort located in Anomabu (also spelled Anomabo), in the Central Region of Ghana, originally known as Fort Anomabo and renamed Fort William in the 1830s by its commander Brodie Cruickshank, who added one story to the main building and named it after King William IV.

Built in 1753 by the British after they thwarted a French attempt to establish a fort at the same location, it was constructed almost entirely with local materials and was considered "one of the handsomest and best built of the Coast". The fort played a devastating role in the transatlantic slave trade, serving as a "slave castle" where human beings were bought and sold before being loaded onto ships bound for America.

It is one of the few forts in Ghana built purposely for slave business. Like Fort Gross Friedricksburg, Fort William was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 due to its importance and testimony to the Atlantic slave trade.
