It was built to serve defensive purposes and was in use from 1525 until 1878. Known also as Hadžibegov Grad or Hutovski Grad, the fortress sits in the municipality of Neum and played a significant role in the region's military history. Over the centuries, it functioned as a protective stronghold, controlling strategic routes and facing various military conflicts.

Today, the ruins of the fortress remain as a testament to the area's turbulent past and are part of the cultural heritage near the Hutovo Blato nature reserve, which is renowned for its natural beauty and ecological importance.
