Frankenstein Castle
Mühltal, Germany, Switzerland
Frankenstein Castle, known as Burg Frankenstein, is a medieval hilltop fortress in the Odenwald mountains overlooking Mühltal near Darmstadt in southern Hesse, Germany, first documented in 1252 when built by Lord Conrad II Reiz of Breuberg, who adopted the Frankenstein name.
Expanded in the 14th-15th centuries with an outer bailey and modernized features, it served as the seat of the free imperial Barons of Frankenstein until sold to the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1662, later falling into ruin as a prison and military hospital.
Possibly inspiring Mary Shelley's 1818 novel through local legends and alchemist Johann Conrad Dippel, the site now attracts hikers for its dramatic views, Halloween events, and preserved remnants along the Hessian Bergstraße wine route.
