Frauenberg Castle
Frauenberg, Germany, Switzerland
Frauenberg Castle, or Burg Frauenberg, is a 13th-century ruined fortress atop Nahekopf hill overlooking the village of Frauenberg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built by the Counts of Sponheim to guard the Nahe River crossing and their estates.
Named after Countess Loretta von Sponheim, who famously captured and ransomed Archbishop Baldwin of Trier in 1328 to fund its construction and secure her son's inheritance, the site featured five round towers, a massive shield wall, and a moat before partial destruction in later conflicts.
The evocative ruins, possibly overlying a Celtic ringwall or Roman fort, now attract hikers via trails in the Hunsrück region for their scenic Dhron Valley views and tales of medieval defiance.
