The Fribourg University Botanical Garden is a compact university garden of about 1.8–2 hectares located in the Pérolles district of Fribourg, next to the Natural History Museum and close to the city centre. Founded in 1937 primarily to teach medicine and pharmacy, it now presents around 5,000 plant species arranged in about 20–23 themed sections, including an arboretum, orchard with old local fruit varieties, rose garden, alpine garden, aquatic and medicinal plant areas, and a systematic garden, as well as three public greenhouses for tropical, arid‑zone and other climate-sensitive plants. The garden functions as an institute of the University of Fribourg devoted to teaching, research and conservation, with particular attention to rare and endangered species from the canton, while also serving as a freely accessible “green oasis” that welcomes roughly 200,000 visitors a year and offers exhibitions, guided tours and educational activities in a calm, park-like setting.
