Frischenberg Castle
Sennwald, Switzerland
Frischenberg Castle is a ruined medieval fortress near Sennwald in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, built in the early 14th century by the lords of Hohensax, likely Ulrich III von Hohensax after 1313, on a rocky ridge overlooking the Alpine Rhine Valley at 585 meters elevation.
It faced destruction and rebuilding in 1446 during conflicts with Appenzell amid the Old Zürich War, changed hands through sales, wars, and fiefs involving Habsburgs and Swiss forces, and was abandoned by 1551 after passing to the Hohensax family who shifted to a new residence.
The remnants, close to the older Hohensax Castle ruins, highlight its strategic role in regional power struggles and now attract hikers to its scenic, forested site with panoramic valley views.
