With roots in Hittite settlements around 2000 BC, it hosted the ancient Greek city of Selinus from 628 BC—later Roman Traianapolis where Emperor Trajan died in 117 AD—before Byzantine, Armenian Cilician, Seljuk, Karamanid, and Ottoman rule until 1472.
Today, it blends rural charm with emerging tourism through ruins like Selinus, Antiochia ad Cragum, and Lamos, plus natural spots such as the Emerald Lagoon, offering a quieter alternative to busier Riviera towns.
