Gesslerburg
Küssnacht, Switzerland, Switzerland
Gesslerburg is a medieval castle ruin perched on a hilltop east of Küssnacht in Switzerland's canton of Schwyz, with origins tracing back to possibly the 9th century and first documented in 1263 as a Habsburg stronghold linked to the legendary bailiff Gessler from the William Tell saga.
It served as a residence for local nobles like the Edle von Küssnacht, who collected taxes and tolls until their line died out around 1352, after which it suffered fire damage mid-14th century, passed to the von Silenen family, and fell into decay following Schwyz's acquisition in 1517.
Purchased by the Swiss Confederation in 1908 and excavated by 1916, the site now stands as a heritage landmark of national significance, accessible via hiking paths from the Hohle Gasse, offering panoramic Lake Lucerne views and evoking Tell's defiant history.
