GOAT CASTLE
Turkey, Turkey
Goat Castle, or Keçi Kalesi, is a Byzantine fortress perched on the southeast peak of Gallesion Mountain near Selçuk in İzmir Province, Turkey, guarding the landward approach to ancient Ephesus along the Küçük Menderes Valley.
Dating back to Hellenistic origins around 300 BCE with major construction in the 7th-12th centuries CE amid threats from Persians, Arabs, and Seljuk Turks, it features strategic walls built as a refuge against Turkmen raids.
The site earned its name in 1090 when Seljuk general Tanrıbermiş tricked defenders by attaching lanterns to goats' horns at night, simulating a massive army and prompting surrender without a fight.
