Gottlieben Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Gottlieben Castle is a medieval fortress in the village of Gottlieben, Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, near Lake Constance, built in 1251 by Eberhard von Waldburg as the residence for the Bishops of Constance on land they owned since the 10th century.
After the Swabian War in 1499, it served as the seat for the episcopal chief constable managing the local low court over Gottlieben and nearby villages like Engwilen, Siegershausen, and Tägerwilen until 1798, when it became private property and was renovated in neo-Gothic style in 1837.
Recognized as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, the castle blends medieval and 19th-century architecture with two rectangular towers, now functioning as a hotel while preserving its role in the region's ecclesiastical and administrative history.
