Greifenstein Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Greifenstein Castle is a medieval hill castle ruin located above the village of Greifenstein in the Lahn-Dill-Kreis district of Hesse, Germany, first mentioned in records from 1160 as a noble seat overlooking the Dill Valley.
Built before 1160 on a 441-meter hill, it was destroyed in 1298 by the Counts of Nassau and Solms, then rebuilt and owned by various families including the Habsburgs and Counts of Solms-Greifenstein, who converted parts into a Baroque palace by 1676 before abandoning it in 1693.
Now a preserved heritage site of national importance with a restaurant, the ruins attract visitors for hikes and views in the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus geopark.
