Rize Fortress
Rize, Türkiye, Turkey
Rize Fortress, known as Rize Castle, is a medieval stronghold on a hill southwest of Rize city center in northeastern Turkey's Black Sea region, offering panoramic city views.
Its citadel likely dates to the 6th century under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, while the lower castle stems from the 13th century, featuring ashlar and mortar walls 2-20 meters high and 2-3 meters thick, with cylindrical bastions and support towers. Blending Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman styles, parts were restored in 1989 and 2011 amid urban development.
