Hohenrätien Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Hohenrätien Castle is a medieval ruin on a dramatic rock plateau rising 250 meters above the Viamala river in Sils im Domleschg, canton of Graubünden, Switzerland.
Inhabited since the Bronze and Iron Ages with Roman-era religious sites including a possible Mithras temple later converted to the Church of St. John, it was fortified in the 11th-13th centuries as a parish center and trading outpost with a main tower, cistern, and walls before abandonment around 1300 due to earthquakes or economic decline.
Now a Swiss heritage site, it features restored structures, event spaces, and hiking access with stunning views over Alpine passes.
