The House of the Blackheads is one of the most famous landmarks in Riga, located in the heart of Riga Old Town on Town Hall Square. Originally built in 1334, it served as a meeting place and social center for the Brotherhood of Blackheads, an association of unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreign traders who played an important role in the city’s commercial life. Renowned for its richly decorated façade, ornate sculptures, astronomical clock, and elegant halls, the building became a symbol of Riga’s prosperity and cultural life. Although it was destroyed during World War II and later demolished during the Soviet era, it was carefully reconstructed between 1996 and 2000 using historical records and photographs. Today, the House of the Blackheads functions as a museum and event venue, showcasing the history of Riga and its merchant traditions. Its striking architecture and historical significance make it one of the most visited and admired attractions in Latvia.
