Verified Ludzas Viduslaiku Pilsdrupas

Ludza, Latvia, Latvia

Ludzas Viduslaiku Pilsdrupas, or the Ludza Medieval Castle Ruins, are the remains of a powerful fortress built by the Livonian Order in the late 14th century on a hill between the town’s Small and Great Ludza Lakes.

The castle served as an important eastern frontier stronghold, helping to protect trade routes and defend Livonia from attacks coming from the east. Originally, the castle was a large three-story structure with six towers, three gates, and extensive fortifications built from stone and brick.

Over the centuries, it was repeatedly attacked and damaged during conflicts involving Russian, Polish-Lithuanian, and Swedish forces, and after the 17th century it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. Today, the impressive ruins are one of Ludza’s most recognizable landmarks and a symbol of the town. Visitors can explore the site, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding lakes and town, and learn about the region’s medieval history through one of Latvia’s most significant castle ruins.
