Irgenhausen Castrum
Pfäffikon, Switzerland, Switzerland
Irgenhausen Castrum is a Roman fort in Irgenhausen, part of Pfäffikon municipality in Zurich canton, Switzerland, perched on the Bürglen hill by Pfäffikersee lake.
Constructed in the late 4th century AD, likely under Diocletian or Valentinian I, this square stone castrum spans 60 by 61 meters with corner towers, gates, and interior structures like a headquarters and bathhouse to protect a vital Roman road from invasions.
Excavated and partly reconstructed between 1898 and 1908, it overlays an earlier villa rustica, was abandoned around AD 400, and holds regional cultural heritage status with visible foundations today.
