Jardin Botanique de Genève, now often referred to simply as Jardin Botanique Genève, is a large botanical garden and scientific institution on the shores of Lake Geneva in the Chambésy area of the city, covering about 28–29 hectares. Created in 1817 and later relocated to its current site, it functions both as a public park and an international reference centre in botany, combining a living garden with a major botanical conservatory. The garden displays roughly 11,000–12,000 plant species from all continents in themed areas such as tropical and temperate greenhouses, rock gardens with alpine plants, terraces of medicinal and useful plants, and an arboretum with notable old trees, offering visitors a “living museum” of global flora. The associated conservatory holds one of the world’s largest herbaria, with around six million preserved specimens, and a major botanical library, supporting research, conservation of threatened species, education and public outreach that together make the institution an important scientific and cultural heritage site for Geneva and beyond.
