Jörgenberg
Breil/Brigels, Switzerland, Switzerland
Jörgenberg Castle is a sprawling medieval ruin complex on St. George's hill near Waltensburg/Vuorz in Switzerland's Surselva region, canton of Graubünden, close to Breil/Brigels.
Originating as an 8th-century fortified church on Frankish-donated lands, it evolved into a feudal stronghold with a 1265 main tower, 1351 palas, and ring walls, passing through families like von Friberg, Rhäzüns, Zollern, and Disentis Abbey before abandonment in the 17th century.
Excavated and restored in the 1930s and late 1990s, the site features a Romanesque bell tower from 1070, remnants of a horseshoe apse church, and stone gallows pillars, now accessible for hikes with panoramic Alpine views.
