Kızkalesi
Turkey, Turkey
Kızkalesi, known as Maiden's Castle, is a picturesque coastal town and beach resort in Mersin Province, southern Turkey, centered around its iconic 12th-century Byzantine fortress built on a small offshore island once linked to the mainland by a breakwater.
The site, part of ancient Corycus, features the offshore castle with curved ramparts, eight unique bastions, a chapel, cisterns, and mosaics, paired with the larger mainland Korykos Castle, both rebuilt by the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia amid Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman history.
Famous for its legend of a princess doomed by a snake bite despite her island refuge, it now attracts visitors for swimming in shallow waters up to the castle walls and exploring UNESCO-listed ruins.
