Kars Castle
Kars Merkez/Kars, Türkiye, Turkey
Kars Castle is a medieval fortress crowning a rocky hill in the center of Kars, eastern Turkey, originally built by the Armenian Bagratuni dynasty in the 9th-10th centuries and rebuilt in 1153 by Saltukid ruler Melik Izzeddin with massive basalt walls up to 36 feet high.
Expanded by Ottomans in 1579 under Lala Mustafa Pasha with 220 towers and deep trenches, it endured destruction by Timur in 1386 and Shah Abbas I in 1606, later damaged during 19th-century Russo-Turkish wars before Russian occupation altered parts.
Today, the citadel offers panoramic city views amid remnants of inner and outer defenses, symbolizing Kars's turbulent history across Bagratid, Seljuk, Persian, and Ottoman eras.
