Kastamonu Castle
Kastamonu, Türkiye, Turkey
Kastamonu Castle overlooks the city of Kastamonu in northern Turkey from a high rock on the western side, with origins in the 10th century when Byzantine commander Manuel Erotikos Komnenos built fortifications named Kastra Komnenon, from which the city's name derives.
Captured by Seljuks through the Çobanoğulları, then held by Candaroğulları beylik before Ottoman conquest, the inner castle, measuring 155 meters long by 30-50 meters wide with 15 bastions, survives after partial destruction in the 1943 Tosya-Ladik earthquake and 2005 restorations. Its layered history reflects Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman influences amid the Black Sea region's strategic past.
