Klingnau Castle
Klingnau, Switzerland, Switzerland
Klingnau Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress in the municipality of Klingnau, canton of Aargau, Switzerland, originally built starting in 1240 as the seat of the Klingen family.
A manor house occupied the site until 1269, after which outer walls were added post-1331, with further expansions ordered by the Bishop of Constance in the late 14th century during his frequent stays there.
By the late 16th century, the castle serving as a bailiff's residence fell into disrepair, prompting the Swiss Confederation to demand renovations from the bishop; it passed to the canton of Aargau in 1804, was auctioned in 1817 for industrial use, and later became a foundation-managed site.
