Köroğlu Mountains
Turkey, Turkey
Köroğlu Mountains stretch across northern Turkey north of Ankara, spanning Bolu, Çankırı, and Çorum provinces between the Sakarya and Kızılırmak rivers along the North Anatolian Fault toward the Black Sea.
Formed by andesitic plateaus, the range peaks at Köroğlu Tepesi's 2,499-meter summit south of Bolu, hosting ski resorts like Kartalkaya and Sarialan at elevations from 1,900 to 2,378 meters. Named after the legendary folk hero Köroğlu, the rugged landscape supports outdoor pursuits amid volcanic geology, though a tragic 2025 hotel fire at Kartalkaya claimed 78 lives.
