Kraljevski grad Bobovac
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Kraljevski grad Bobovac is a medieval royal fortified city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, built in the early 14th century by King Stephen II Kotromanić.
It served as the main residence and political center for Bosnian kings during the 14th and 15th centuries and housed the royal court, the crown jewels, and the mausoleum where several Bosnian monarchs were buried. The fortress is strategically located on karst ridges, making it one of the best-defended cities of its time, featuring Gothic and Romano-Gothic architectural elements.
The complex includes multiple palaces such as the Grand Palace, Upper Palace, and an annex with workshops for master craftsmen. Inside the fortifications were also important spaces for worship and the burial chapel for the royal family. Bobovac fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1463, marking the end of the medieval Bosnian kingdom, but today its ruins stand as a significant cultural monument symbolizing Bosnia’s royal history. Excavations have uncovered frescoes, inscriptions, and artifacts that reflect its rich medieval heritage.
