Lausanne Botanical Garden (the Vaud Cantonal Botanical Garden, now part of the Naturéum) is a small city botanical garden of about 1.7 hectares on Montriond hill, a short walk from Lausanne railway station and near Lake Geneva, offering views over the city and lake in a quiet, park-like setting. Inaugurated in 1946 and listed as a Swiss historic garden of national importance, it was designed as a carefully landscaped “outdoor museum” with rock gardens, ponds, waterfalls, paths and an arboretum that together create varied microhabitats for plants. The garden cultivates roughly 4,000–6,000 plant species from around the world, with notable collections of alpine plants, medicinal and pharmaceutical species, carnivorous plants, succulents, tropical and Mediterranean plants, as well as local and rare flora from the canton of Vaud, supported by a botanical museum and specialised library dedicated to documenting and conserving regional plant diversity. It is freely accessible daily, making it a popular place for residents, students and visitors to stroll among labelled collections, learn about plant biology and conservation, and enjoy a green refuge in the heart of the city.
