The Liepāja Northern Forts, located in the Karosta area of Liepāja in Latvia’s Kurzeme Region, are dramatic seaside ruins that once formed part of the massive Liepāja Fortress, built by the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to protect a strategic naval base. In 1908, the fortress was declared a strategic mistake and ordered to be dismantled. Although explosives were used to destroy the fortifications, many of the massive concrete structures survived, leaving behind a fascinating network of bunkers, underground passages, and artillery positions. Today, the partially collapsed forts stand along the Baltic Sea coast, where erosion and waves have created a striking landscape of historic ruins. Known for their unique atmosphere, military history, and scenic coastal setting, the Liepāja Northern Forts are among the most unusual and photographed attractions in Latvia.
