Livonian Order Castle Ruins
Aluksne, Alūksne pilsēta, Alūksne Municipality, Latvia, Latvia
The Livonian Order Castle Ruins in Alūksne are the remains of a medieval fortress built in 1342 by the Livonian Order on Castle Island, the largest island in Lake Alūksne. Originally known as Marienburg, the castle served as an important defensive and administrative center on the eastern frontier of Livonia. Over the centuries, the castle was controlled by various powers, including the Russians, Poles, and Swedes, reflecting the region’s turbulent history. During the Great Northern War, the fortress was heavily damaged and eventually destroyed in 1702, leaving it in ruins. Today, the site is one of Alūksne’s most notable historical landmarks. Visitors can explore the atmospheric stone ruins, see the restored Southern Tower, enjoy views of the lake, and experience cultural events held on Castle Island. Local legends, including the story of a girl named Maria said to have been walled into the castle, add to the site’s enduring appeal.
