Lucens Castle
Lucens, Switzerland
Lucens Castle is a medieval tower house in the municipality of Lucens, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland, built in the 13th century by the Bishop of Lausanne to control the strategic Broye valley transit corridor, repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt during the 12th and subsequent centuries.
It served as a bishop's residence until 1536, when Bern conquered the area and transformed it into a bailiwick seat, enlarging it between 1579 and 1586 as an arsenal and border fortress against Fribourg, before passing to private hands in 1801 after the French Revolution.
Designated a Swiss heritage site of national significance, it later housed a girls' institute in 1925 and the Conan Doyle Foundation from 1965 to 1970, hosting a Sherlock Holmes museum, and now functions as a private event venue within ancient walls.
