Mamure Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress near Anamur in Mersin Province, southern Turkey, on the Mediterranean coast, originally built by Romans in the 3rd-4th century AD on ancient foundations to guard against pirates.
Expanded by Byzantines and Armenians of Cilicia, it was captured in 1221 by Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, then by Karamanids under Mahmut Bey around 1308 who repaired and renamed it "Mamure" meaning prosperous, featuring 39 towers, three courtyards, a mosque, hamam, and 23,500 square meters protected by a moat.
Annexed by Ottomans in 1469 with further restorations, it served as a caravanserai and garrison, now a UNESCO tentative site showcasing layered Roman, Seljuk, Karamanid, and Ottoman architecture amid scenic cliffs.
