Minneriya National Park is a wildlife reserve in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, about 182 kilometers from Colombo and part of the “Cultural Triangle” near ancient cities such as Polonnaruwa. The park centers around the large Minneriya reservoir, originally built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century as a massive irrigation tank, and now forming a key dry‑season water source that draws large herds of Sri Lankan elephants from surrounding forests. Between roughly May and September, this creates the famous “Elephant Gathering,” when hundreds of elephants congregate on the lake’s grassy edges, making Minneriya one of the best places in the world to see sizable wild elephant groups up close. The roughly 90‑square‑kilometer park also supports other mammals such as leopards, sloth bears, sambar and axis deer, monkeys, and over 160 bird species, and is visited mainly via jeep safaris that start from a single main entrance near Habarana or Sigiriya.
