Mosque Kuslat
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Kuslat Mosque is a unique and historic building from the early Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina, constructed between 1460 and 1480 during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II El-Fatih.
It is considered the oldest military mosque in the country and was built inside a medieval fortress to serve the needs of the Ottoman army stationed there. The mosque is located on a challenging-to-access site atop a mountain near Zvornik, perched above the Drinjaca River canyon, and is notable for its wooden minaret and high roof, combining military function with a modest, house-like architectural style. The fortress and mosque played a key role during the Ottoman expansion, with the site's strategic position making it nearly impregnable.
Although the mosque was damaged during the Bosnian war in 1993, it was carefully rebuilt using authentic materials and reopened in 2013. Today, Kuslat Mosque remains a symbol of resilience and spiritual heritage for the local community, where religious traditions like communal prayers during Ramadan continue. Historically, Kuslat was also a fortified medieval town that protected travelers in the region, and its name is linked to the Turkish word for "bird," reflecting local cultural motifs associated with falcons.
The mosque is one of the few surviving reminders of this layered history and offers stunning views along with a deep connection to the Ottoman history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
