Built in the 3rd century BC by Lysimachos, a general of Alexander the Great, during Smyrna's refounding, its medieval walls enclose Byzantine cisterns, ruins of an Ottoman mosque, and traces of Hellenistic fortifications from layered eras including Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman occupations.
