Moutiers-Saint-Jean Abbey
Moutiers-Saint-Jean, France, Switzerland
Moutiers-Saint-Jean Abbey is a historic Benedictine monastery founded around 450 AD by Saint John de Réôme in eastern France's Côte-d'Or region, in the village now named after it, not Switzerland.
It grew into a major Carolingian-era power center under rules from Luxeuil and Aachen reforms, patronized by Burgundian dukes and kings, with a 12th-13th century Romanesque church featuring notable capitals and a doorway now in New York's Cloisters museum.
Sacked multiple times including by Huguenots in 1567, it was largely demolished post-French Revolution in 1797, leaving ruins and dispersed artifacts like Louvre capitals as remnants of its influential past.
