Munot
Schaffhausen, Switzerland
Munot is a distinctive circular 16th-century fortress perched on the Emmersberg hill overlooking Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland.
Constructed between 1564 and 1589 partly through compulsory labor, it replaced earlier fortifications dating back to at least 1376 and symbolizes the city's defensive ambitions after joining the Swiss Confederation in 1501.
Featuring cavernous galleries, battlements with panoramic Rhine views, and a moat now home to fallow deer since 1905, it saw brief military use in 1799 before becoming a cultural landmark hosting events, with its bell rung nightly at 9 p.m. as tradition.
