Münsingen Castle
Münsingen, Switzerland, Switzerland
Münsingen Castle is a Renaissance-era chateau in the municipality of Münsingen in Switzerland's Canton of Bern, built in 1550 by Schultheiss Hans Franz Nägeli on the site of a 12th-13th century fortress once held by the Senn family, which Bern demolished in 1311.
Retaining traces of its original circular curtain wall in the footprint and garden, it was renovated in 1749-1753 with features like the von Steiger room's sepia tiled stove, passing through noble owners before the municipality acquired it in 1977 for use as a local history museum.
The castle now displays exhibits on former residents like the von Steiger family and puppeteer Therese Oberli, alongside the nearby former psychiatric clinic site, all part of Switzerland's heritage inventory of national significance.
