Murten Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Murten Castle is a prominent medieval fortress in the bilingual town of Murten (Morat) on Lake Murten in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.
Constructed in 1255 by Count Peter II of Savoy, it features a distinctive quadrangular keep known as the "Luegisland" tower, from which Adrian von Bubenberg observed the pivotal Battle of Murten in 1476, where Swiss Confederates defeated Charles the Bold of Burgundy.
Rebuilt in 1755 after earlier modifications, the castle has served as a residence for bailiffs from Bern and Fribourg, a hospital, prison, and barracks, and today houses the Canton of Fribourg’s Prefecture for the Lake District while hosting events like the annual Murten Classics festival.
