Mut Castle
Mut, Türkiye, Turkey
Mut Castle is a medieval fortress overlooking the town of Mut in Mersin Province, southern Turkey, with origins possibly tracing to Roman times in the 1st-2nd centuries AD and significant expansions by the Karamanids in the 14th century.
Captured by the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum under Kayqubad I in 1225 and later incorporated into Ottoman control by 1473, it features a 3,900-square-meter enclosure with nine defensive bastions, a cylindrical inner keep, and architectural layers from Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras including outer walls and renovated structures from Sultan Ahmet I's reign (1603-1617).
Perched at 310 meters above sea level, the site blends military history with panoramic views, serving as a co-capital during the Karamanid period amid the Taurus Mountains.
