New Schauenburg Ruin
Frenkendorf, Switzerland, Switzerland
New Schauenburg Ruin, located near Frenkendorf in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, is a medieval castle ruin known as the "new" Schauenburg despite predating its counterpart Alt-Schauenburg, which was abandoned earlier and thus called "old."
Built in the late 12th or early 13th century by the Schauenburg noble family as a hilltop fortress, it features remnants of towers and walls later repurposed around 1480 by Beguine lay sisters who established a cloistered house amid the ruins.
Managed by a dedicated foundation, the site preserves its cultural heritage with hiking access and highlights its role in regional feudal history alongside the nearby older ruin.
