Nidau Castle
Nidau, Switzerland, Switzerland
Nidau Castle is a medieval fortress in the town of Nidau, Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Biel/Bienne in the Canton of Bern.
First documented in 1196 with wooden precursors from 1140 and 1180, the stone structure built in the early 13th century by Counts of Neuchâtel or Nidau features a 40-meter tall keep, thick walls, round towers, and a moat, serving as their residence until 1375 amid sales to Kyburgs, Habsburgs, and a dramatic 1388 siege by Bernese forces.
Awarded to Bern post-Sempach War, it functioned as a bailiwick seat for centuries with 16th-17th century additions like a residential wing, later becoming district offices after 1803 while now housing a museum on regional water history as a heritage site of national significance.
