Ostrožac Castle
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Ostrožac Castle is a historic castle complex near Cazin in Bosnia and Herzegovina, originating in the 13th century as property of the noble Babonić family.
It was built as a military fortress overlooking the Una River and surrounding region to defend against Ottoman expansion. The castle grew into a large complex, with medieval fortifications later enhanced by the Ottomans after their conquest in the late 16th century. The fortress was highly fortified, with walls, towers, and bastions that withstood attacks for almost a century.
In the early 20th century, the castle was partly rebuilt in a neo-Gothic style by Lothar von Berks, the mayor of Bihać, who turned it into a grand residence. The castle grounds are home to an open-air sculpture park featuring monumental works carved from local bihacit stone, hosted by a long-running international sculptors' colony. Today, Ostrožac Castle is a national monument known for its rich blend of medieval, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian architectural elements, and offers stunning views of the Una River valley and the surrounding landscapes.
It stands as a significant cultural and historic symbol of the region's layered past.
