Ritterhaus Bubikon
Bubikon, Switzerland
Ritterhaus Bubikon is the best-preserved commandery of the Knights Hospitaller in Europe, located in the municipality of Bubikon in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, founded around 1192-1198 as a gift from the Counts of Toggenburg and Rapperswil.
Originally serving as a medieval monastery complex with a Romanesque chapel featuring 13th-century murals, a commander's house, knights' hall, and economic buildings, it managed extensive lands until secularized during the Zurich Reformation in 1528 and sold in 1789.
Restored by the Ritterhaus Society since 1936 and federally protected since 1959 as a Class A heritage site, it now operates as a museum showcasing the Order's history, coin collections, weapons, and a medieval herb garden.
