Rosenberg Castle
Herisau, Switzerland
Rosenberg Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a hilltop near Herisau in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, constructed around 1150 by the Lords of Rorschach, who adopted the name von Rosenberg from their new stronghold.
It served as a key defensive site with thick walls up to 2.9 meters and a prominent tower measuring 9.7 by 9.9 meters, hosting notable events like a 1271 Christmas feast for Abbot Berchtold von Falkenstein and 70 knights, before being burned in 1403 by Appenzell rebels against Habsburg influence.
Listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of Regional Significance at 872 meters elevation, the remnants now offer hikers access to panoramic views and traces of its Romanesque architecture amid the Appenzell landscape.
