Rudenz Castle
Giswil, Switzerland
Rudenz Castle is a ruined medieval tower castle on a hill overlooking the village of Giswil in the canton of Obwalden, Switzerland, built around 1200 by the Rudenz family who originated from the Haslital valley.
It served as their seat as they expanded influence in Obwalden and allied with Uri nobility like the barons of Attinghausen, before the family sold their properties between 1361 and 1366 and relocated to Uri, with the tower remaining inhabited until the 16th century.
The simple stone structure with layered block walls and a high entrance now stands as a heritage site accessible to hikers, surrounded by evidence of early excavations uncovering medieval artifacts amid scenic alpine views.
