Rue Castle
Rue, Switzerland, Switzerland
Rue Castle, or Château de Rue, is a medieval fortress overlooking the historic town of Rue in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.
First mentioned in 1152 as the seat of Rodolphe de Rue, vassal of the Counts of Geneva, it was destroyed in the 1230s before being rebuilt by Peter II of Savoy between 1260 and 1268 with a square keep and fortified walls housing three dwellings.
Damaged during the Burgundian Wars in 1476, it was reconstructed from 1619 to 1763, serving as a residence for Fribourg's bailiffs and prefects until 1848, and later privately owned; today it occasionally opens for events and connects to aviation history through Ferdinand Ferber, who tested gliders there in 1898.
