Ruine Alt-Biederthal
Burg im Leimental, Switzerland, Switzerland
Ruine Alt-Biederthal is a vanished 12th-century castle ruin near Burg im Leimental in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, associated with the lords of Biederthal who were ancestors of families like Ratolsdorf, Rotberg, and Blauenstein.
First referenced in 1168 when the area was called Biedertan after this old fortress, it was abandoned and likely destroyed within the 13th century, giving way to a newer replacement castle built mid-century by the Lords of Ratolsdorf.
Today, only subtle traces remain in the landscape as a Swiss heritage site of national significance, tied to the village's medieval history on the route to the Roman-era Remel Pass.
