Verified Ruine Alt Ramschwag

Switzerland, Switzerland

Ruine Alt Ramschwag, also known as Ramschwag Ruins, is a medieval castle ruin situated on a plateau overlooking the Sitter River in the eastern part of Häggenschwil municipality, Canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Built shortly after 1200 with simple edge-cut stonework and curtain walls, it served as a stronghold for the lords of Ramschwag, vassals of St. Gallen Abbey, passing through families like Rosenberg-Zuckenriet in 1370 and Helmsdorf until late 15th-century landslides rendered it uninhabitable, leading to dismantling by a farmer.

Excavated and conserved in 1930-1932 with artifacts like arrowheads and oven tiles discovered, it was acquired by Häggenschwil in 2013 and further stabilized in 2022, featuring remnants of a bergfried tower, ring walls, moat, and drawbridge abutments amid natural defenses.
